Administering Hapé
Hapé/Rapé (pronounced ha-peh in Portuguese, and ra-peh in Spanish) is a sacred plant medicine traditionally used in ceremonies for grounding, cleansing, and spiritual alignment. Administering hapé requires intention, respect, and mindfulness. Below are guidelines for both self-administration and administering to others.
Self-Administration
Preparation
Begin by creating a calm, sacred space free from distractions. Light a candle, burn incense, and have essentials like napkins and a small bag handy for later use.
Open the ceremony with a prayer to the four directions, inviting the spirit of tobacco, Pachamama, creator, and high-vibrational beings to bless and guide your experience. This intentional setup ensures the space is energetically charged with positivity. Playing indigenous music is highly recommended. Once prepared, sit comfortably—ideally in a lotus position—and focus on your intentions.
Set Your Intentions
Setting intentions is a vital part of the healing process. Take a moment to reflect: Why are you engaging in this ritual?
High-vibrational intentions might include:
- Gratitude for life, the medicine, and daily blessings.
- Connecting with your higher self and the divine.
- Seeking clarity, spiritual awakening, inner peace, or self-love.
Passing Hapé to Others
When administering Hapé to another person, a tepi—a straight applicator designed for partner use—is traditionally used. This sacred practice involves clear communication, mutual respect, and a grounded presence. As the giver, you set the healing intention for the receiver, making the ritual deeply spiritual and transformative. Unlike self-administration with a kuripe, the tepi delivers the medicine deeper into the nasal cavity, and the breath of the giver becomes an integral part of the process.
Prepare the Space
- Ensure a calm, sacred environment, free of distractions.
- For indoor settings, light candles and burn incense to create a ceremonial atmosphere.
- Have essentials ready, such as napkins, a small bag for disposal, and water.
- Play tribal music to enhance the ambiance. (We provide chants and singing at Shaman Hapé to support this process.)Invite the recipient to sit upright, relaxed, and with an open heart to receive the medicine.
Discuss Intentions
Engage the recipient in a discussion about their intentions for the ritual. Encourage them to reflect on their goals for grounding, healing, or spiritual clarity. Simultaneously, set your own intention as the giver to serve with love, respect, and blessings, ensuring a shared sacred energy.
Prepare the Hapé
- Measure the appropriate amount of Hapé, adjusting the dosage to the recipient's needs and experience level.
-
Divide the powder equally for both nostrils. Keep in mind that some individuals may require less while others benefit from a slightly larger amount.
Building Connections with the Huni Kuin
We have established deep and meaningful connections with the Huni Kuin people, also known as the Kaxinawá, an integral group within the indigenous communities of the Amazon rainforest. With a population of approximately 10,000 individuals, the majority of the Huni Kuin reside in the state of Acre, Brazil, while others inhabit the eastern regions of Peru. Their culture, traditions, knowledge, and spiritual practices like Ayahuasca, hapé, Kambo are vital to the rich tapestry of the Amazonian indigenous peoples, and we truly honor and respect their contributions to the preservation of this unique environment.
Guardians of Ancestral Wisdom and Spiritual Harmony
The name Huni Kuin translates to "true people" in their native language, reflecting their deep connection to their culture and traditions. The Huni Kuin maintain a profound spiritual relationship with nature and are renowned for their sacred rituals, storytelling, and plant medicine practices, which include the use of ayahuasca and hapé. Central to their culture is the principle of living in harmony with the natural world, and their ceremonies are often focused on healing, self-discovery, and forging connections to ancestral wisdom. Through these practices, the Huni Kuin continues to honor and preserve the spiritual teachings that have been passed down through generations.
Mastering the Art of Hapé: The Sacred Craft
The Huni Kuin people are renowned for their expertise in crafting a wide range of hapé blends. Our cacao and Cumaru hapé, sourced from the Vinya Tribe, are especially recognized for their superior quality. The production process is not only meticulous, involving careful preparation and processing, but also deeply connected to sacred spiritual practices. These practices include chanting, dancing, praying, and singing, each of which plays an integral role in imbuing the product with spiritual and energetic vitality.
Hapé & Spiritual Practices
It is important to emphasize that hapé, as a medicine, carries not only its physical properties but also an energetic force that channels the Indigenous energy of the Huni Kuin people. This approach ensures that each blend is much more than just a mapacho-based product—it is a sacred offering that embodies the profound connection the Huni Kuin have with the earth and their spiritual traditions. Thus, every time we work with the mapacho, we invite the spirit of tobacco and Pachamama, our beloved earth. We respect medicine and its ability to tap into higher consciousness.
